8 Benefits of Inviting a Doula to Join You on Your Parenthood Journey

It is World Doula Week and we are celebrating the important work that doulas provide!

There are many benefits to families when they have professional physical, educational, and emotional support during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, but if we had to choose, here is a countdown of our all time favorites.

8. Doulas help you find the route that’s best for you and your family.

When it comes to parenthood, the world is full of resources and people with opinions – some great and some not so great.  Your doula is by your side as a sounding board for you to navigate the overwhelming amount of options and suggestions so you can decide what makes most sense for you and your family.  Our only agenda is for you to feel supported and validated. No matter your choices, we respect them.

7. A doula carries with them a confident and calm presence.

Calm is often not the first word that most folks use to describe childbirth. And while you and your partner are under no obligation or expectation to stay calm, when a doula is on your team, you can be sure that there will be that steadiness by your side. No matter what may pop up through your process, we are prepared to be present with you and create space for you to adjust in whatever way feels right. And hopefully our confidence and calmness is a little bit contagious.

6.You have 24/7 access to birth experts.

You h ave access to us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from the time you sign a contract with DC Doulas. We are on call for all your questions and concerns as your pregnancy progresses and even when you bring baby home. Your team has over 10 years of doula experience and childbirth education and you can keep us on speed dial to help you figure out what is normal and healthy. Rest assured, if we don’t know the answer, we know what expert to send you to for help.

5. When you are ready, you’ll have unwavering and constant support.

During labor, there is a point where you will know you are ready for continuous, face to face physical and emotional support. When that time comes, your doula will join you and will not leave your side until your baby is in your arms. Studies have shown that doula support through labor reduces the instances of unnecessary medical interventions, increases the satisfaction of parents’ birth experiences, and improves the wellbeing of the whole family during the postpartum period.

4. Doulas are known for their magical foot massages.

Enough said, right? You’ll learn about many different comfort measures while preparing for your labor, but with a doula on your team, you won’t need to worry about remembering all of them. We are there to help you cycle through different options until you find a ritual and rhythm that helps you cope. You have what it takes to get through, and just in case you need it, we’re there with tips and tricks, massage techniques,  and lots of encouragement.

3. Peace of mind knowing that your partner is being cared for while you focus your energy at the task at hand.

One of the most common concerns we discuss with clients during our prenatal visit is how their partners are going to cope with the process of childbirth. We understand and believe this experience is just as much the birth partner’s as it is the person going through labor. This is a journey you two go through together to become parents, and we know it’s not easy to watch the person you love most in the world go through such an intense process. When a doula is on your team, your partner is able to support you, and have support themselves.

2. Doulas provide an extra set of hands.

It’s no secret you are a superhero. You literally grew a little human and brought them into the world, we are most definitely impressed. Unfortunately for most parents, that superpower doesn’t include octopus arms – that’s where we come in! It takes some time to adjust to juggling the tasks that a newborn requires, and while we are confident you are more than capable, we are so honored to provide an extra set of helping hands in the postpartum period.

1. Passion.

Above all else, we bring passion and the experience of caring for growing families in our community. It takes a village to raise happy and healthy families, and our hope is for you to always remember you don’t have to take on this transformative chapter alone.
DC Doulas is confident you are going to be an amazing parent! It would be an honor to join you on your parenthood journey.

Love,

Alyssa
