Motherhood is a lesson in bravery.
From the moment you choose to be a mother, to watching your children create lives of their own, you are facing fear and doubt head-on.
To all the mothers out there: Your bravery does not go unseen.
As labor doulas, we bear witness to a mother’s bravery as she makes her birth plan in the months leading up to meeting her child for the first time. We see it again as she listens to her body and tosses that plan right out the window during labor. It is a mother asking for clarification, asking for the delivery room to be kept cooler, asking for help.
As postpartum doulas, we are reminded of this bravery time and time again as we watch parents, new and seasoned, raise their families in the ways that make sense for them. At home it’s waking up in the middle of the night to feed your newborn. It’s checking one more time that there are no monsters under the bed. It is turning off your phone for an hour to take a moment to breathe.
We only see these vignettes, but we know how important they are.
Bravery is weeding through all of the opinions and comments swirling around in your head and choosing what feels right for you and your family. It’s giving yourself permission to change your mind. It’s in knowing when to stand your ground and knowing when to let go.
Your bravery is a product of your strength.
Your family is a product of your bravery.
Every moment, you set an example that teaches them the power of resiliency, and allows them the freedom to grow into their best possible selves.
It takes being brave to bring a new person into this world.
This Mother’s Day, we want you to know that your bravery is seen, supported, and celebrated.
Happy Mother’s Day from DC Doulas!
