One of our most crucial jobs as labor and postpartum doulas is understanding our clients’ expectations. In this week’s blog we break down what you can expect from your doula when you’re expecting.
What You Can Expect from Us
Finding the right doula for your growing family is an important step in creating your birth plan. Building a team of experts means you will be prepared for the parts of birth that you didn’t expect.
From the moment you announce you’re pregnant, it can seem like others have their own expectations for how you will deliver and care for your child. At DC Doulas, we believe in providing unbiased support, whether in the delivery room or during the postpartum period.
This means that no matter how you envision your journey, we are here to support you all the way. We’ve been trained to support the type of birth that you choose. If you’re planning to exclusively breastfeed, or feed your baby formula, we will affirm your decision and provide you with support and education.
As your doulas, we work with you to form a birth plan, discussing the options you wish to include. Any questions along the way will be answered offering the benefits, risks, and alternatives to all possible paths. But as we remind all our clients, these plans are just an outline. Though we can talk about how you want this birth to go, sometimes labor may not look as expected. We will be with you every step of the way.
Setting expectations creates a wonderful foundation for your birth and lets your team of providers know your wishes.
As options are presented, you can expect us to offer affirmation, support, and options if desired. This is your labor, your body, and your baby. We trust that you will make the best decisions for yourself and can answer any questions you may have.
During our prenatal visit we inquire about your expectations for labor and what your postpartum period will look like. As your expectations or plans change, we are equipped to change with them.
